125 Middle and High School Grading System

Purpose:

The Superintendent, through the Principal or other designee, shall be responsible for ensuring that accurate, up-to-date information concerning the Manchester School District grading system is published on the district and school websites. A detailed guide to grading and reporting practices will be disseminated to all students and their families. This policy will also be referenced in each edition of the student handbook. As soon as it is practical and feasible, the Superintendent or designee will inform all students and their families of any modifications made to the grading system.

Grading Policy and Reporting

Grading Policy:

The Manchester School District believes in fair, equitable, and transparent grading practices. As such, all grading and reporting practices will reflect the following characteristics:

1)      Grades and grading should only reflect a student’s academic performance.

2)      The grading system will measure, report, and document student proficiency against a set of clearly defined content area standards.

3)      Grades will measure and document academic progress and achievement separately from habits of work, character traits, and behaviors.

4)      The grading system will ensure clarity, consistency and fairness across all students, teachers, assessments, learning styles and experiences, content areas, and time. This can be done through the use of standard based rubrics, or other measures.

5)      Grading shall not be used as a form of punishment.

6)      The grading system shall be designed to equitably communicate with all relevant stakeholders (i.e. families, students, secondary institutions, educators) to ensure they have the detailed information needed to make important decisions about a student’s education.
