Student Assistance Program

The purpose of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) is to identify and help students who may be experiencing personal, family, alcohol, or other drug problems which may be affecting their ability to perform well in school. By participating in support groups with peers who share similar concerns, students are able to learn more about their particular circumstances and develop healthier coping skills. Participation is completely voluntary.

Support groups are separate by gender, and consist of no more than 12 students. They provide an opportunity for sharing common concerns, experiences, and ideas in a caring and supportive environment. All information shared in the group falls under the Federal confidentiality guidelines. Groups meet weekly on a rotating basis so students don't miss the same class more then twice a quarter.


Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a very important aspect of the SAP. Contact with the SAP Counselor and participation in support groups are confidential under Federal Law. The only exceptions to this law are cases of suicidal or homicidal behaviors, as well as cases of abuse or neglect.


Getting Involved

Students can sign up to participate in a support group, or are referred to the SAP Counselor by friends, guidance counselors, teachers, administrators or parents. Each student then meets individually with the SAP Counselor to discuss possible options for group. All services are provided during the school day, and at no cost to the students.


Types of Groups:

  • Friends: for students affected by the drinking or drug use of a family member.
  • Family Issues: for students dealing with a lot of stress or fighting at home.
  • Communications: for students having difficulty communicating due to anger or insecurity.
  • Divorce: for students dealing with the effects of divorce.
  • Grief : for students who have lost a relative or close friend.
  • Awareness: for students struggling with their own drug/alcohol use.
  • Other: specific group topics are created when the need arises.
