January’s Staff Member of the Month is Kim Dittbenner.

Caught Being Kind:

Student: Jaylyn Pelletier

Team: UConn Jaylyn displays kindness every day by assisting the students who struggles with organization. She helps students in an unassuming manner by reminding them to write down their homework assignment in their agenda, opening their book to the correct page, and helping them be prepared for the day's instruction. She displays consistent kindness at it's best.

Student: JadeMarie Syvain

Team: Clemson

Jademarie showed compassion, concern, and kindness by advocated for a friend.

Student: Kasey Mejia

Team: NYU

Kasey showed compassion, concern and understanding for some of my students who struggle in science class. She offered to partner with them during our lab and was supportive and sweet.


From Fall 2018- Winter 2019- Each student met with their advisory teachers to set goals for growth from the fall to the winter. Students will meet with their teachers again to do the same for the spring. We are so proud of our students for taking the assessment seriously and doing their best! The individual progress of our students is commendable. We are still finishing up testing with a few students. Please continue to support your child’s academics, behavior, and attendance as they move forward into the second half of the school year.

In Reading:

Our at risk students (two or more grade levels below) decreased from 52% TO 44%.

Our Tier 2 students (1 grade level below) increased from 20% to 25%.

Our Tier 1 Students (On grade level) increased from 28% to 31%

83% of our total student population met their typical growth rate goal for the year.

In Math:

Our at risk students (two or more grade levels below) decreased from 43% TO 37%.

Our Tier 2 students (1 grade level below) stayed the same 38% to 38%.

Our Tier 1 Students (on grade level) increased from 19% to 25%.

43% of our total student population met their typical growth rate goal for the year.

Geography Bee

Southside held it’s 4th annual Geography Bee in the cafe on Tuesday. Student winners from each Social Studies class in grades 6-8 took turns answering some very difficult questions such as “Which mountain range is the traditional division between Europe and Asia? And which river forms part of the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua?” Congratulations to our Geography Bee winners!

First Place- Sezar Farj- Grade 7

First Runner Up- Caroline Wainaina- Grade 6

Second Runner Up- Isabella Cocozziello- Grade 6

Breakthrough Manchester

Ms. Lucy Weathers from Breakthrough Manchester presented information to recommended 6th grade students this month. An information session about the Breakthrough Manchester Program will be held on Thursday, February 14 from 3-6:00 pm at the Derryfield School for parents that are interested in speaking with directors.The Breakthrough Manchester application for 6th grade students is due by February 21, 2019.
